Free, Easy Tips for Healthy and Manageable Hair

Five Beauty Secrets the Beauty Industry Hopes You'll Never Learn

Do you struggle with frizzy or damaged hair? Do you keep looking for just the right shampoo or conditioning treatment that will finally solve your hair problems? The shampoo industry is huge and companies know that you are looking for some magic in a bottle that will give you silky, manageable hair.

Here are answers to the top 5 questions we get every day from women wondering why their hair won't "behave."

  1. My hair is damaged from colouring and using straighteners. Do I have to get a haircut? What can I do?
Damaging your hair, especially when you've invested the time in growing it long, is very upsetting. While the fact is that damaged hair cannot be "nourished" or "rebuilt from the inside", you may be able to keep some of your length and just trim the damaged ends away gradually.

This will mean that you take very good care of your hair going forward, conditioning often and avoiding all heat styling.

  2. I use the expensive XYZ brand of shampoo and conditioner, but my hair still frizzes in the heat. Is there a different brand I should try?
Television and magazine ads are very successful in leading you to believe that more expensive is better in the shampoo world. The fact of the matter is that most shampoo and conditioning formulas are pretty much the same. You can usually get the same, if not better, results by using a main brand or even value brand shampoo.

In my opinion, while you are unlikely to get a bad result from an expensive shampoo, the only reason to pay that much money is because it smells really good. This is a perfectly good reason to buy a more expensive brand, but don't believe for a minute that it is in fact better than the cheaper formulas.

  3. Can you recommend a product to control my frizzy hair?
Frizz is usually caused by either your hair being damaged or by you trying to style against your natural curly or wavy texture. If you have a natural curl or wave in your hair, you have a high sulphur content in your hair.

Unless you chemically remove or alter this sulphur (by having your hair relaxed or permed), your hair will continually want to reset itself along its natural alignment at the slightest exposure to moisture.

This moisture can come from the air or from the sweat off your skin or scalp, so trying to fight your natural texture can lead to a constant battle between you and your hair.

  4. Which heat protecting serum should I use before straightening my hair?
Heat protecting serums work by deflecting heat away from the surface of your hair, which is why they are excellent to use with straighteners. However, they are only effective up to a certain temperature, not at the 200-degree level that is preset on most straighteners.

Hair does benefit from a low level of heat applied when styling, as it causes the cuticle to dry harder and flatter than if it air dried alone. The best method is to apply your serum to your hair, and then blow dry your hair until it feels dry to the touch (using a low heat).

The cuticle is then very hard and as smooth as it can be for your texture. Then use your straighteners to finish off. Your hair may not be as straight as it could be, but you are very unlikely to damage your hair.

  5. Is an organic shampoo better than the regular brands that use all those chemicals?
The key question when talking about organic personal care products is "what are they better for?" The answer is that choosing organic products is, generally speaking, better for the environment.

This doesn't mean it is better for your hair or skin. Organic does not mean it is less "harsh", less likely to cause cancer, or in any way make your hair style more easily for you.

In my opinion, you will get better behaving hair by using main brand shampoo and conditioner in probably much smaller amounts than you are used to using. It will cost you less and your hair will very probably be happier and healthier.

"Please DO NOT remove me from your email list! I look forward to your emails each week, they are so interesting and useful. A nice change considering how much junk I get normally. Keep them coming!" - Emma C., Leicestershire

I receive thank you letters nearly every day from women just like you who have been frustrated for years by their hair "not behaving". Hair, like skin, is complex and varies from person to person. Each woman needs to become familiar with the quirks of her own hair and work with these unique characteristics.

No more reading the backs of shampoo bottles covered with their (usually) empty promises for "shiny, healthy hair." To tell you the truth, your shampoo may very possibly be causing you all your problems and I don't care how organic it is or how full it might be of amazing proteins. I will help you understand how your hair grows, whether you have fine, thick or curly hair, and how to get your hair in top condition.

"Thank you for your advice about changing my shampoo. You have saved me so much money and my hair really is happier now. I am going to experiment with your other ideas and I will let you know how I get on!" - Karine T., London
